Guides

NinjaTrader 8 guides & how-tos.

Straight answers to the things traders actually search for — how to set a tool up, what NinjaTrader does and doesn’t do out of the box, and how to get your chart working the way you want it. Written by a working futures trader, no guru hype.

Built by a trader, for traders · NinjaTrader 8

NinjaTrader 8 is a powerful platform, but a lot of what traders want — news on the chart, clean key levels, an EMA cloud, a bar counter, a connection monitor — either isn’t built in or is more basic than you’d expect. These guides walk through how to do each of those things properly, and point you to the tool that does the job when the platform falls short. Everything below is free to read.

Key levels & the opening range

The prices the whole market references — the previous day’s high and low, the session opens, and the opening range. Getting them on the chart automatically means you stop redrawing lines every morning.

Trend, moving averages & VWAP

Reading which way the market is leaning, and where the average price sits. From color-filled EMA zones to a full VWAP setup with deviation bands.

Reading the bars

Price action keys off which bar it is and how the bars are forming. Numbering them makes time-of-day and count-based patterns explicit.

Chart style & readability

The chart should show you what you read and nothing that distracts. Restyle the candles, label the instrument, and keep your notes where you can see them.

News & platform health

Two things NinjaTrader doesn’t put on the chart: the economic calendar, and a clear read on whether your connection and the platform are keeping up.
